The linguistic boundaries shown on the map were extracted from The World Language Mapping System (WLMS), which is a comprehensive, up-to-date, and trusted geographic data set of the point and area (polygon) locations of the world's 7,100 living language groups. The map shows a global picture of what a world map looks like if we remove the political boundaries. It shows, for instance, how linguistically diverse Africa and South-East Asia are compared to Europe.
